After Saif Ali Khan turned up to advocate the importance of road safety norms to Delhiites, dad Mansoor Ali Khan came to tell them why they shouldn’t drink and drive.
The former Indian cricketer and the Nawab of Pataudi, Khan Sr was in the capital recently to create awareness against drunk driving and to launch Delhi Police’s latest initiative to curtail it.
As apart of this new initiative, the traffic police has started an advertising campaign and put up three hoardings in Khan Market that list the number of drunk drivers prosecuted and the number of licenses suspended since July 31, 2011.
Similar hoardings were put up on Humayun Road and Sher Shah Road earlier.
“This year, we have suspended 1,745 driving licenses and arrested 2,034 people so far,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic). He also shared that the accident rate had gone down by 9%.
The traffic police plans to put up more such hoardings in other areas in the city, such as malls, where liquor is sold. “We thought of Khan Market because it is one of the most prominent locations in Delhi. There are numerous restaurants and bars here that serve alcohol. Apart from the footfalls, a lot of cars also pass through this area,” said Garg.
Expressing his views on drunk driving, Khan Sr said, “Drivers need to be more responsible as driving drunk not only affects them, but can also harm their family and other innocent people.”
